“I believe the human figure is the most interesting and important subject in art”

John was a Scottish artist who left his home in Edinburgh to forge a career in London, practicing art and teaching life drawing in Hampstead and Camden. He painted and sketched 365 days a year for 70 years.

“I went to my first life class in 1944. Since then I‘ve been constantly drawing from the figure and trying to find a satisfactory way to present it on canvas.”

John exhibited his work from 1949 - 2009 in over 30 galleries all over the UK, including:

- Royal Scottish Academy

- RA (Royal Academy)

- The AIA Gallery

- The Piccadilly Gallery

- Victor Arwas Gallery

- The Redfern Gallery

- Camden Arts Centre

- Highgate Gallery

John’s earliest memory of being interested in art was at 7 years old, when he excitedly explained to a fellow pupil at school how if you mix orange paint and black paint, it makes brown!
